Yolanda Borrás

Yolanda Borrás co-founded Conciertos de la Villa de Santo Domingo, serves as its Executive Director and directs its educational activities.

 

A native of the Dominican Republic with degrees from Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University and Columbia University Teachers College, Yolanda's career has involved living across the world, from Paris and Hong Kong to New York City.  Fluent in three lanuages, her professional activities encompass bilingual education, music education and business entrepreneurship.  She recently completed her participation in a two-year Community Business Program for Entrepreneurs at The Eugene Lang Entrepreneurship Center at Columbia Business School.

 

Yolanda Borrás is widely acknowledged as an expert in developing music programs for children in the Spanish language.  She offers specialized professional development and interactive teacher-training workshops for educators who incorporate Spanish children's music in their program.   Drawing on her vast collection of traditional Spanish music materials compiled from research in the National Library of Spain, major libraries in the USA and in Latin America, Yolanda provides custom-designed support materials in Spanish for educational institutions in the USA and abroad.  As an international consultant, Yolanda has led workshops at a national level, created award-winning products to be used in public schools and developed music education programs in her native country, the Dominican Republic.  

Yolanda's mission is to promote, preserve and provide educators and parents with traditional songs and activities of Spanish-speaking countries and cultures and share them with children around the world.

She has been invited to lead sessions and speak at numerous national conventions in the USA including:  Music Educators National Biennial Conference, Global Language Convention, National Association for Bilingual Education National Convention, the American Teaching of Foreign Languages Annual Convention and World Languages Expo, the Early Childhood Music and Movement Association International Convention and the High Scope International Conference ( 2016).  

 

I'm Bilingual! is an innovative early childhood bilingual arts program that offers a Spanish music curriculum for young children in New York City.  Founded by Yolanda in 1999 under the name Musical Kids International, the program was featured by CBS as Best Language Classes for Kids in NYC.  I'm Bilingual! is based on a rich cultural curriculum with musical activities that include traditional songs from Spanish-speaking countries and cultures.  Yolanda is the author of ¡Caramba! Kids (2006), a Parents’ Choice Silver Honor Award-winning CD and ¡Cantemos todos juntos! book and CD set for children, parents and educators.

 

Yolanda Borrás is a member of leading organizations in the field of music and education, such as Kappa Delta Pi (International Honor Society in Education), the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development and the National Association of Bilingual Education, among others. Yolanda was a featured alumni in the Johns Hopkins University Magazine, has been interviewed for programs in NPR and by EdLab at Columbia University Teachers College.  She has also been featured in national and international publications including the New York Times. Yolanda Borrás is listed in Who’s Who of Outstanding American Women and Who’s Who in American Education.
